Sometimes I think graphic design is the “elephant in the room” that no one wants to talk about. And being a designer, I’m kind of insulted. Why is design often looked upon like an overpriced non-necessity? Think of the design of your printed pieces this way……if a well-intentioned guest arrived at your annual gala wearing sweatpants, ratty shoes and uncombed hair, what would your impression be? Not so good, right? “But wait,” the guest might say, “I really mean well…I really do contribute to society!” Too late…your impression is already formed.
Graphic design is not just the difference between beautiful and boring – it is the difference between customers choosing you and choosing your competitors. Design is not an expense…it is an investment!
One of the simplest but, often the most overlooked, aspects of good graphic design is a professionally developed logo. A company, especially a new one, should have a brand that is easily recognized and communicates to the customer exactly what it is you do. A strong logo gives you instant credibility and presents a professional appearance. Unfortunately, a fair number of start up businesses decide to “save” money and develop a logo themselves, or worse yet they get their friend who “knows how to draw” to put something together for them. You might save some money but in the end you only leave potential clientele with an unprofessional and less than polished image of yourself.
The goal of every good graphic design should be to clearly communicate your message. Vibrant and effective graphic design can help your message stand out. The catchphrase “it’s not what you say, but how you say it!” is a fundamental truth in effective design!
Your image is the only thing potential buyers can connect with. Make sure the first impression you are making is the right one!

Congratz Kyle! Indeed first impressions matter. The logo you did for my business (Great Celebrations), has stood the test of time ; we still get compliments on it.

Thanks for your kind words Jacqueline! However you are giving me credit where credit isn’t due….I did not originally design your logo – you brought it to me and I think I just had to do a little “clean up” on it. It must have been your original design!

Awesome post Kyle. The logo you designed for my business gave it an instant identity, people recognize it readily. If a business wants to be professional, it has to start off with a professional name and look.
